Seasonal Portuguese sweets made by Conceição Batista from a licensed home kitchen. Rabanadas at Christmas, filhoses at Carnival, ovos moles year-round for the families who grew up with them. She also makes envelopes — the little egg custard-filled pastries that disappear off every tray in under an hour. Order at least two weeks in advance.

A Portuguese bakery that has supplied the North Ward with pão de leite, pastéis de nata, and bola de Berlin since 1974. The Figueiredo family has run it across three generations. The current display case is the same case from 1974. There is no plan to change it. The bread is the plan.

Inês Rodrigues makes Portuguese conservas — sardines, mackerel, and salted cod preparations — from recipes her grandmother used in Alentejo. She supplies North Ward families and a handful of Newark restaurants. Her smoked sardine pâté is not available at any store. You have to know someone who knows Inês.
